Frank Miller's most overlooked and rarely remembered Batman story. And for good reason. The comic doesn't stand out as much as any other crossover, of which there were plenty in the nineties. With only Spun alone. Batman was faced three times. But only once has this collision been described by such a stellar cast of authors. Todd McFarlane for the cause is considered almost the most famous artist in the comic book industry. The same can be attributed to Miller as a screenwriter. And these two stars came together to bump the main characters of DC Publishing and Image Publishing. It turned out pretty well.
It's impossible to say exactly at what point in Millervers' story the crossover takes place. But that its action takes place in this universe is stated in the introduction to the skirmish itself. Batman here is quite experienced enough not to be a rookie from "Year One," but not old enough to be an aging veteran from the later adventures. So let's just stick the comic somewhere in between these time periods, and not get steamed up. In it, the Dark Knight battles giant robots (90s!), flies a nuclear missile (EXTREME), and leaves his long-lasting mark on Spawn's face (in the truest sense!). One of Miller's two most important works about Batman. Not only because virtually the entire fan base of the character merged in ecstasy after reading it, but also because for a very long time Year One was the official story of the character's formation. The replacement didn't happen until 2013, when Scott Snyder и Greg Cappulo created their own "Zero Year.". And, with all due respect to the excellent arc, it was done for nothing. Miller and artist David Mazzuchelli's work reflects too well what the beginning of a street crime fighter's career should be like to replace it with another comic book about confronting supervillains. Nevertheless - "Year One" is now removed from the official Batman story, and belongs entirely to Millervers.
The distinctive feature of "Year One", thanks to which it stands out against all comics about Batman and will appeal even to those who do not like superheroes - it can hardly be called a superheroic. It's basically devoid of costumed freaks, unless you count Batman himself and a brief cameo Catwoman. At its core, First Year is a simple and down-to-earth crime story, whose place is in the palp novelette, or film noir of the forties. There are the local organized crime groups, there are the corrupt police, there is Bruce Wayne who has just arrived in town and is still undecided about his future plans, and there is there's Jim Gordon...stuck in the middle of this nightmare. It is the latter, not Batman himself, who emerges as the story's protagonist, through whom the reader is introduced to the unfriendly streets of Gotham.
And what streets they are! Filthy, frightening, extremely atmospheric, and incredibly realistic. Thanks to the outstanding caloring of Richmond Lewis.Gotham drowns in bright neon light, bathes in the morning light, plunges into the mysterious night darkness... In a word - lives its own, independent life, becoming no less important character than Gordon and Wayne. Well, Miller's writing talent reaches one of its absolute peaks here. The number of memorable moments in "Year One" is such that it surpasses absolutely all the Batman comics. Except for one. But more about that later.

It's been called the worst comic book of all time, Frank Miller's greatest disgrace, the worst Batman story, the most offensive sexist parody... There's a lot to list. But there's no need to. Behind all these loud and empty epithets one loses the essence for which "All Star" was created. That essence is banal and simple - All Star Batman & Robin is one of the funniest comics you'll ever read.
Simple, primal hilarity lurks literally around every corner here. Batman, an insane maniac who maims people left and right, abuses an orphaned child, and deals with Black Canary and has sex with Black Canary in the middle of burning criminals. Little Dick Grayson, eating rats, poking crazy Batman, and beating other superheroes to death. Justice League., made up entirely of deliberately caricatured and hilariously contradictory images of familiar characters from the mainstream universe. All of this Miller blends into an absolutely wild cocktail of pure insanity that may not be to your liking, but cannot help but "deliver." I don't even need to mention the absolutely lavish number of quotable moments.
And where "All Star" doesn't bribe you with insanity, it bribes you with its ostentatious "awesomeness. This is primarily thanks to Jim Lee, who drew this series even more diligently than Hush. Flying batmobiles, stunning women, six-page spreads with a bat-cave, and a bunch of other stuff that's better seen once than heard a hundred times. Just ask yourself - where else have you seen a muscular machoAlfredopenly telling "Master Wayne" to go fuck himself? That's right.
And if that's not convincing enough for you, just know that Miller and Lee love their brainchild, and hope to someday get the publisher's approval for the final six issues, ending the satirical story of a madman's transformation into a wise mentor for their adopted son. Live with it.
