Tattoo of the lily is often found in floral tattoo styles that are becoming increasingly popular. Behind each image there is its own story, its own symbolism and meaning. What does the lily symbolize?

The meaning of the lily is much the same as that of the lotus in the East. The lily, the flower of nobility, symbolizes harmony, tranquility, hope, delicacy, innocence, glory and grandeur, peace and tenderness.

In Christianity, this flower is associated with the image of the immaculate Virgin Mary, and therefore invariably represents modesty, virginity, humility and meekness. On the icons of the Annunciation in the hands of the Archangel Gabriel, you can see the unique bud, which seems light, airy and bright, almost shining.

In Greek culture, the lily has been an indispensable attribute of the goddesses for many centuries. According to Greco-Roman legends, the flower grew from the milk of Hera, the earth goddess. In Rome, the flower symbolizes hope and even adorns ancient coins.

It was widely believed that the lily was a symbol of fertility. Thus, in ancient Egypt, flowers adorned the bodies of dead young girls. The Egyptians believed that in this way doomed them to a happy life with many children in the other world.

Medieval sources in Germany have information that elves live in lilies. In German folklore, there are legends according to which elves inhabit open buds, and if the tiny creature dies, the bud closes.

In some nations, this flower was considered the distinguishing mark of members of noble families. As a sign of reverence, respect and nobility, the lily was used in Crete, Byzantium and medieval France.

If the stem is studded with several flowers, it symbolizes immortality. It is believed that such a finding - to good luck, and a tattoo or amulet with such an image will bring wealth, power, health and success.

Tattoo with a depiction of a lily can have many meanings, not always positive. For example, some time ago, a tattoo with this flower was considered a stigma of women of easy virtue. In prisons, this ornament for the tattoo is chosen by ladies of non-traditional sexual orientation.

The meaning of lilies in different colors

The snow-white lily often stands on a par with the white rose and is considered the queen of flowers. Thus, the valuable beautiful flower often represents wealth.

Girls who choose to tattoo a gorgeous snow-white bud surrounded by thorns or weeds emphasize the importance of purity and innocence against a stained and cruel world around them.

Previously, a tattoo depicting a white flower was thought to be a significant risk because it sometimes meant death. The yellow lily may be preferred by a girl if she is characterized by willfulness, pride, unapproachability and arrogance. To emphasize these character traits, girls often choose to tattoo the back.

The orange lily suits extraordinary and creative personalities who are not afraid of other people's opinions. They tend to make decisions on their own, regardless of the voices of the majority. However, the tiger lily often means defiance to the maximum extent, that is, hatred.

The pink flower is chosen by delicate, shy girls, as it symbolizes youth and tenderness. Usually pink lilies are small, single and look extremely cute.

But girls who are passionate, hot, alluring are better to give preference to dark flowers. Lilies of rich dark shades are a symbol of fragrance and beauty of the night, ardent and unsolved mystery, embody passion and desire. The classic "representative" of passion is the red lily.

The lighter the color of the petals, the more luminous, light and sublime energies rule the woman. A single white or soft-pink flower will always be associated with sinlessness, chastity, fragility, purity of thought and motives.

A few snow-white lilies on one branch represent rebirth or immortality.

Botanical description

Lycoris is a 30-70 cm tall perennial bulbous plant. The bulbs are relatively heat-loving and can tolerate only light frosts in the open air. Their diameter is 5 cm. In mid-spring, several strap-shaped, narrow, bright green leaves emerge from the soil. The leaf plate is 30-40 cm long and 5-20 mm wide. By mid-June, the leaves die off completely, but a long, fleshy stem appears. It has a round section and may reach a height of 70 cm. The top of the shoot is decorated with an inflorescence of large buds. A single bulb can produce 4-7 flowers per season, arranged on a single stem.

The flowering period of lycoris begins in September, when the leaves disappear and the site is covered with beautiful bunches on long, bare stems. The flowers exude a pleasant, intense fragrance. They are divided into two groups. One type of flower has longer, thread-like stamens that protrude far beyond the petals. Other buds have stamens only slightly longer than the petals. The petals of lycoris can be colored white, yellow, orange, or red.

After pollination, the fruits - three-channeled seed bolls - appear. They contain small black seeds. However, not all lycorices are capable of reproducing by seeds. Some species are completely sterile.

Tattoo on a woman's body

As a rule, cats, butterflies and flowers are the favorite images for women's tattoo. Most often, representatives of the weaker sex give preference to the royal, or heraldic, lily on the body.
The royal lily symbolizes endless love, devotion and loyalty to the chosen one. It is the flower that adorned the coats of arms of the French monarchs, and therefore is associated with nobility, grandeur and French chic.

Typically, the floral pattern for the tattoo choose modest, feminine girls who become a faithful spouse and a good keeper of the hearth.

Girls who choose flowers for tattoos have considerable creative potential, artistic vision of the world and uncommon talents.

In ancient times, the lily on the body was flaunted by girls of easy virtue, and there are many other negative meanings of this tattoo. However, experts in the field of tattooing advise to give their meaning to the drawing on the body, not listening to the opinions of others.

Care features

Caring for lycoris will not be a great difficulty, but it is still necessary to observe some rules. For the flower, you should choose a sufficiently bright place, but exposure to direct sunlight is undesirable. In the spring, when the plant is just waking up, indoor lycoris need additional lighting.

The optimal air temperature is +20 ... +27 °C. Outdoors it is necessary to protect flowers from draughts. Lycoris can overwinter only in climate zones 4-9. To prevent the bulbs from freezing, they are planted deeper into the ground. From the bottom to the surface of the soil should be about 30 cm.

Lycoris should be watered regularly, so that only the top layer of soil dries out. Stagnant water is contraindicated to the plant, otherwise the roots will rot. The soil surface should be periodically loosened. In the resting period (winter and summer), when the ground part dies off, watering is reduced to a minimum.

In spring and at the beginning of flowering, it is useful to feed the plant with an organic complex. Fertilizer is applied under the root in diluted form. An excess of nitrogen salts should be avoided.

At the end of autumn, it is necessary to remove dried shoots. You can additionally cover the plantings with fallen leaves and lapnik to protect the bulbs from frost.

On what part of the body do I get a tattoo?

Ready sketches as in the open access, and in personal portfolios of masters a great variety. Not surprisingly, both a branch with a single bud and a full-fledged abstract image with many flowers are placed on almost any part of the body. Some girls come to the master already with a certain idea, which only remains to be embodied in reality.

Most often for flower tattoos girls choose hands: shoulders, forearms, even brushes and wrists. The flower can be quite tiny or become a detail of the whole picture on the body.

Bold girls who know their worth, like to draw attention to themselves and find their figure attractive, determine the lilies on the stomach, on the hips, on the sides, on the lower back. It is not uncommon to see lily petals on a woman's back, especially in the shoulder blades area.

If we talk about the style of the tattoo, the leaders are realism, watercolor and geometry. A girl usually chooses the direction depending on the message: tenderness and vulnerability are emphasized by smooth and soft lines, and geometric clarity and sharpness, contrast and confident borders of light and shade are traced in the tattoos of passionate, strong, bold, active ladies.
Ready for experiments and open to everything new girls give the master the right to choose, that's why on the woman's body it is possible to notice the image made in different styles.
This adds individuality and emphasizes the creative potential of not only the tattooist, but also the bearer of the tattoo.

Lovers of myths and fairy tales give preference to a fantastic style, but young modest women more often choose for a small lily realism.

Plant species

There are 20 species of plants registered in the genus Lycoris. However, only some of them are actively grown in our country.
