The appearance of the Joker changed from film to film. THE JOCKER VERSION
The Joker has no complexes about his scars. He enjoys sharing their origins with those he's about to maul. Nolan's Joker was especially notable for this, which is objectively the most frightening so far.
By the way, Jared Leto lives his life without any scars, he's just a psycho wannabe. Handsome and weird: girls love them.

There is an even less tied to the events of the comic book and movies version. True, it does not really explain anything. It's been rumored that the creators shoved an Easter egg in the Joker: "a smile from Chelsea.". The fact that the ferocious Chelsea fans at the turn of the 70's and 80's terrorized the whole of Europe, and their trademark was the same Chelsea Smile - a scar that stretches from ear to ear.
