You throw five or six of the most common types into the machine, steal a set of standard situations from hundreds of other similar titles, add a series about a summer festival, a school festival, exams and the beach, and voila, the season is ready, and there is always an audience for such goods. So it turns out that every month there are several similar romantic comedies about schoolchildren, which receive mediocre reviews, but are still profitable because of the cheapness of production and the indiscriminateness of the audience. That's why I hardly ever watch modern romcoms, and if I do, it's only the highest quality, produced by well-deserved and experienced studios that are trying to bring something new to a genre that is stagnating. Fortunately, Horimiya is one of them.
The series can safely be divided into two equal parts. The first part is about the development of Hori and Miyamura's relationship, which is logical, consistent, and fluid. In this first episode, the main characters do not stagnate for a few seasons, but get right down to business, a fact which speaks volumes. Horimiya in my eyes higher than 90% of other romcoms. And it does not look forced, but rather logical and logical. Romance is definitely the strong point of the tie-in. The second part of the story concentrates on the relationships of the other minor characters and the revelation of their personalities. On the one hand, it allows the viewer a break from Hori and Miyamura, as at a certain point even the nicest characters can become annoying. On the other hand, it was the episodes and scenes devoted to the secondary characters that I liked the least.. There are several reasons for this. First, these characters themselves look pretty formulaic, but we've already discussed that. Secondly, I didn't have time to develop an emotional connection with them, so there was no desire to empathize with their problems. Towards the end of the series, the amount of screen time of the minor characters begins to exceed the amount of time Hori and Miyamura have, and I found myself getting bored watching it. It felt as if towards the end the show had lost its fuel and it's just coasting along inertia, just to get to the end.
If we talk about the format of the series, it, like most romcoms, consists of a set of everyday scenes with a through plot, but in general often independent of each other. In principle, it is easy and uncomplicated to watch, and is diluted with various emotional backgrounds. I think if we're talking about percentages, it's 50%. Horimiya - is a comedy (simple); 30% is a romance (excellent, especially compared to other romcoms); 20% is a philosophy of life and drama (predictable, but not bad). Sounds to me like a great formula that has been proven time and time again to be effective, and in Horimiya it came in handy. Comedy, romance and drama are harmoniously mixed together, so that the series maintains a varied emotional background, not to get bored. You can get more out of it if you want. Horimiya would be silly to demand.

Let's digress a little, and talk about romcoms in general, and the reasons for my dislike of the genre in particular. One of the biggest problems with most high school romcoms is that the characters in them are either as formulaic as possible, or they lack development. Let's start with the formulaic. In order to simplify their lives, some unscrupulous screenwriters simply choose some random character trait, elevate it to an absolute, and then build jokes and interactions on it. There is no question of any character nuance or layering in such situations. You are simply presented with an extensive list of mannequins with colorful hair and a pronounced main character trait to choose from. Here's Vasya - he has red hair, he's angry and hot-tempered. Petya - he has green hair, he is quiet and calm. Masha is blonde, popular and stupid. Let Vasya interact with Petya in the first episode, Petya with Masha in the second, and in the third they will coexist all together. You can watch this kind of thing for five minutes, maybe ten, but soon such uncomplicated entertainment gets boring and there is a desire to drop the series after a couple of episodes. The second standard problem with romcoms is the lack of character development. It is characteristic of people and their characters to change, especially when they are actively interacting with each other. Especially if we are talking about high school with its crushes, hormones and adolescent maximalism. So if the character in the last episode of the romcom is no different from himself in the first (and the plot could have been months, if not years), then something went wrong when writing the script.
Fortunately, neither the first nor the second flaw Horimiya are not peculiar. Let's take a look at the main characters. How thoughtful and interesting they look against the standard romcom protagonists! How many little details are laid out in them! Take for example, Kyouko Hori. A seemingly ordinary, popular girl who is every guy's dream. Templates of perfect schoolgirls that excel in everything come to mind at once. But no! The viewer is shown from the very first episode that, despite her abundance of positive qualities to love, Hori also has small weaknesses and flaws that can be appealing too! She is at ease with her father. Likes it when a guy is mean to her. Loves horror movies. Is moderately selfish. And how lively and realistic those little touches make her look! Here it is - a truly balanced and multifaceted human character, which is characterized by making mistakes, getting angry, happy, sad, and speculating about all sorts of nonsense. It should not be perfect and one-sided - it should be alive!
Izumi Miyamura also turned out to be a curious character. His example best reveals the harmonious development of the character. In the first episodes of the season, Miyamura is a typical high school student who has decided to withdraw from public life. Subsequently, the viewer is even shown the reasons for his reticence and youthful rebelliousness hidden in his past (how many people have you broken, high school...). Usually such characters are annoying for their weakness, but in Miyamura's case, you understand the reasons for such behavior and begin to empathize with him. And in the end, he doesn't complain about his fate, which is also appealing about him. Then, slowly and gradually, under the influence of Hori, he becomes more and more open. He makes friends. He stops being afraid to speak his mind. And in return, other people begin to pay attention to him and reach out to him, even those who had once made a semblance of harassment. In this way, the layers of Miyamura's character are gradually revealed. The viewer, along with Keko, digs deeper and deeper into them, discovering new traits and weaknesses, making Miyamura, just like Keko, look alive and realistic.
I can't say such warm things about the secondary characters. Yes, most of them look quite lively and realistic, but their depth and elaboration leaves much to be desired. It feels like the writers put all their efforts into creating the main characters, and the secondary ones were made in the form of the same notorious dummies with hyperbolized main character traits. For example, Hori's girlfriend named Yuki Yoshikawa tries to appear light-hearted and cheerful, although in reality she is unsure of her abilities. And Miyamura's friend Tooru Ishikawa - is an active sportsman who knows his own worth. They seem to be quite good, but I constantly have a feeling of deja vu, because almost every anime about high school students has such characters. If I'm going to single out anyone in a positive way, it's my dad. Kyousuke Hori with the face of a hentai protagonist and a funny character, who himself brings some kind of comedic twist to the anime. Another standout is Hori and Miyamura's kohai named Honoka Sawada.Miyamura's koja by the name of Honoka Sawada, who has a good comedic arc to her. The rest of the characters, such as the school board members and relatives of the heroes, I do not remember well because of the lack of originality.
