Every beginner tattoo or tattoo artist has probably faced the problem of choosing a tool for work. In order to decide which tattoo machine is better rotary or induction, it is necessary to get acquainted with the principle of their work, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of these devices.
Let's take a closer look at what these two types of tools are, what common features and differences they have.
What is a rotary tattoo machine?
Rotary-type machines are equipped with power units with an eccentric. The principle of operation is the transformation of rotational motion into reciprocating motion. Using the rotor, tattoo masters have the opportunity:
- set the needle speed;
- adjust the desired impact force.
There is practically no vibration in rotary-type machines. The penetration rate varies from 50 to 1 thousand times per minute. Rotary machines are better for painting and shading. Most of the modern machines in question are encased in aluminum and well protected. At the same time, the weight of the machine is small, which makes it possible for the tattoo artist to work comfortably. The machine is easy to work with and is most suitable for beginners in nail art.
Induction machines
The modern induction tattoo machine works more complicated than the rotary one. Its main part is formed by magnetic coils. Standardly they are from ten to sixteen pieces.
The main attention at work with it the masters should pay attention to a choice of needles with which they should stuff a tattoo. They come in a variety of sharpening and configurations. A real expert always has several variants in a set. Some are designed solely for shading, others for applying small details and tracing them.
When using an induction machine, you can adjust the frequency of the needles and the force of the blow, which is set with the help of a pressure screw. It is necessary to find a balance in the power of impact. But if you adjust not strong enough - the work will be useless. But if you adjust it too high, the skin will be damaged.
Induction machines are heavier in weight, they need the skill to work. There are two variants:
- Contouring.
- Contouring.
The contour one is easier. After all, the contour itself is made with less active effort and fast movements. In machines the coil has a small number of turns. Also the contact spring is shorter and stiffer. All this is necessary for a sufficiently sharp direction of the needles during the procedure. Tattoo machine needles come in different diameters as well as the way they are placed on the spike.
Unlike the other type of machine, the spring is less rigid and longer, and there are more coils. It works slower, but there is less trauma to the skin, the pigmentation is uniform and even, quite dense in consistency.
Popular types of tattoo machines and their differences:
- Rotary machines are lighter in weight, the master feels less fatigue.
- Induction is needed for contouring, and the other type is for strokes, transitions.
- Rotary machines penetrate to a shallow depth and a small return of work on problem areas.
- Rotary needs to be driven several times to get a result, while induction does it at once.
- The rotary machine makes a slight buzzing sound, while the other type makes a loud crackling sound.
Good craftsmen have different machines, each performing the function for which they are designed.
In terms of quality, both the rotor and the induction do their job perfectly. They are not better or worse, they are just different, so they only do a better job for the functions for which they are needed and for which they are designed.
A professionally performed procedure cannot be performed if the requirements in the form of quality tools and quality materials for the procedure are not met. Therefore, choose your machine wisely!
What is an induction tattoo machine?
Induction machines use an electromagnet. It attracts and repels the plate with a rod. A working needle is attached to the plate. Induction tattoo machines are divided into several types. Each machine is responsible for a specific operation:
- contouring machine;
- A machine for painting over.
All the equipment in question has one common and significant disadvantage - it is an increased level of vibration and noise. But is this an obstacle for the real master?
What is characteristic for the induction machines for tattooing
At first glance, when comparing induction and rotary tattoo machines, the first option seems a little outdated and old-fashioned. Coil machines are more difficult to operate and can lead to scarring of the skin. But once you master the induction tattoo machine, the quality of your tattoos will improve.
Induction tattoo machines are preferred for drawing thick outlines and dark areas of the design. These tattoo devices are a little heavier because of their design, but that doesn't make them less in demand on the market. In these machines, the needle is driven by an electromagnetic circuit.
Care
Care for rotary clippers consists of lubricating the blades and cleaning the mechanism from dirt. Cleaning is done after a few uses.
Before lubricating, clean the unit thoroughly, paying attention to the area where the static and dynamic blades come into contact. Cleaning is done with a special brush or with a water jet, if the design allows it.
Lubricate the device with a special oil. It is inadmissible to use ordinary oil, as it forms a film on the blade surface, which remains on the hair during shearing.
An important point: the knives should be wiped dry after lubrication.
How it works
The work of the rotary machine is provided by a mini electric motor, the power of which is specified in the passport data in revolutions per minute (3000 - 9000 rpm), or in watts (15-45 W). This allows you to work for a long time without stopping, but at the same time does not heat up, because the design uses forced cooling.
In addition, noise and vibration levels are lower than other types of machines, such as vibrating machines. The power of the motor copes with stiff and especially thick hair. These devices are characterized by increased strength, durability and reliability.
Blades are used removable, the principle of their attachment is almost identical for all models - fixation on the latches.
The differences between the vibrating and rotary machines: In vibrating machines, the mobility of the knives is provided by an electromagnetic coil. This option belongs to the category of budget models, with a small number of additional functions. This is due to the low power of the mechanism, which in rare cases reaches 15 watts. As a result, the device can not cope with thick hair.
Another disadvantage is a short operating time, the gadget can turn off after 20 minutes after the start of the process. In addition, they have a higher noise level and vibration
Despite the advantages, before the vibrating models, the rotary machines have one disadvantage - a high price. It is due to the fact that the service life and functionality, much more. Another possible disadvantage would be the relatively high weight.
Safety and sterilization of devices
Having dealt with the main types of devices for tattooing, let's move on to another factor - the convenience of sterilization. The safety of the client should always stand in the first place for the master, so all tools, equipment and the workplace itself should undergo additional treatment.
The procedure consists of several stages:
- Reusable tools are placed in a bath of ultrasound/sterilizing agent. This will remove mechanical dirt, protein contaminants, and grease.
- The equipment is then treated in an autoclave where it is kept at a temperature of 180 degrees or more for at least one hour.
- After the instrument is completely treated, it should be stored in a special UV cabinet.
"Classic" treatment methods such as rubbing with alcohol, soaking in sterilizing agents, or boiling are unreliable and very dangerous for your client. Remember - pigment, pigment caps, needles for work must be disposable, their reuse is not allowed.
Features of the rotary typewriter device
Such machines have a simple device, they are quite easy to repair and last a long time. They need breaks in work, but less and less often than vibrating ones. Corded models can stay on longer than cordless models. The rotary system is powered by an electric motor, which is connected to a self-contained battery or wire.
Connected to the motor rotor is an eccentric connected to the cutting unit. The nozzles are driven from it. Knives in the devices can be interchangeable - manufacturers produce them for specific models.

Rotary devices have high power - 50 W or even more. The disadvantage of the systems is the rapid heating of the motor and because of this there is a greater risk of machine failure. To prevent breakdowns, manufacturers install fans in the machines, cooling the motor.

Such a tool is worth supplementing with pigments and consumables, which will allow you to create an original tattoo that will adorn any person.
Vibrating machines: device and principle of operation
The work of the device is based on the principle of electromagnetic induction. There is no electric motor with an eccentric in it, they are replaced by a transformer coil in the winding and a pendulum, in which a permanent magnet is installed. When turned on, current passes through these elements and drives a core connected to the moving blade. The blades move due to the vibration of the pendulum. A pair of springs is installed near it, so that the blades move more accurately and clearly.
The vibration system works quietly because the power of magnetic motors is, on average, up to 15 watts. This is a modern and easy-to-use equipment, but it can only work continuously for 15-20 minutes. Therefore, the vibrating equipment is well suited for individual applications.

Another disadvantage is the non-removable blades. To keep them, and with them the machine, from failing, they need to be cleaned and lubricated regularly after each use.
The difference between a tattoo machine and a permanent makeup machine
Despite the fact that the permanent makeup and the method of application of conventional tattoos are similar in general terms, they have quite serious differences - it is the technique of execution and the equipment used. Certainly, it is not recommended to use the usual tattoo machines for facial permanent make-up.
Professional devices used by masters of permanent make-up do not allow the paint to be applied to large areas of the skin and to a considerable depth. That is why the tattoo "is not eternal", and over time, of course, fades. But if you follow all the rules of technology application of permanent and the use of high-quality pigment, it will be worn by the client for a long time.
Another difference of such machines is that their purpose is to draw fine lines in the facial area. Of course, the release of manipulators for tattooing, manufacturers necessarily take into account the peculiarities of the epidermis of the eyelids, eyebrows and lips.
