Last September, Karaganda hosted the first International Tattoo Festival. It turned out to be one of my brightest adventures of the past year. After lying under needles for 8 hours, winning "The best of day" nomination, my delight had no limit when I found out that the master Ivan Vostok, who depicted a masterpiece worthy of exhibition halls on my leg, had visited Karaganda again.
This time, the victim of beauty was Alexey.
Lesha was waiting for Ivan for several months and the wait was worth it. Ivan did practically impossible! In "Tattoo Pharos Studio" for 23 hours, he once again proved that he is worthy of the title "Tattoo Master"! Under the whirring of needles, in an atmosphere of sterility and sacrifice for the sake of this eternal art, Ivan agreed to a short interview:
Ivan Sergeyevich, how did you come to be with us for the first time?
- I was the first time I was invited to the Tattoo Festival, the first festival in Karaganda, and I was miraculously found on the Internet by Uslan Batyrbaev. Of course I was most intrigued by the name of the city, because I've heard a lot but never seen it, and I certainly didn't think I'd ever be here. Naturally I could not refuse, though of course there were doubts, but in the end I came, which I do not regret. So that's how my first visit to this beautiful city happened.
- What prompted the second visit? Was it Lyosha?
- Well, so did Lesha (our guest continued with a sadistic smile), but in fact, Ruslan invited me as a "Guest Master" to work. This European practice gives people the opportunity to purchase a tattoo from a master without bothering to go somewhere to him, which greatly saves their financial expenses. Although the practice all over the world is such that people are ready to go wherever for the master, if only to get exactly from him the work. It's like collecting paintings from specific artists.
- What are your plans after Karaganda?
-Likely on March 15th I am going to China to Hong-Kong, from Hong-Kong I will fly to Bali, then I will come back and almost immediately go to Altmaty for Tattoo Festival. After almaty I go back again for 2-3 weeks and then to the festival in Prague. If I did not miss, then after I will have to go to Canada, in Toronto.
-And now a little for the general public. How did you come to this? What motivated you to do it and how long do you plan to do tattoos?
- I'm going to do it until my last breath, until I die. I started by accident. Still when I was a cadet of flight school, in my attire, in any other privations of cadet life it dawned on me that I want to draw very much. I tried and something seemed to work out, even though I had never drawn before, never learned anything. And then I studied and studied and studied until I had a chance to tattoo the guys I was studying with. Certainly I think that tattoo did not shine with quality, but in any case - it was the first tattoo. (By the way, that tattoo was a dolphin) And so it went, I got better at once than the guys who were doing tattoos longer than me, I was their competition. Until now I am improving and I think that it is not possible to reach some limit in this profession. I'm just at the beginning of my journey.
-Each craftsman works in his own genre, which do you do best? Or do you do everything?
- I do almost everything, but not everything. There are some works like Dotwork, not really interesting Old School, but in general I do all the other styles, but preferably realism and Fantasy. I am totally immersed in creating colorful, vivid subjects
- Are there any criteria for clients?
- Any difficult criteria at me to clients it is not present, but the client should be fresh by itself so to speak and necessarily sober, well naturally - adult. Moscow is a big city, there are cases that, come to do tattoo - schoolboys. It is not an isolated case, very often. Someone comes to do tattoo with parents. Strangely enough, many schoolchildren's choices are very good, but it's very scary that these are students in grades 7-8.
-Can I bring my parents?
-Yes, they're the ones in charge of them.
-Do you have a favorite job accomplished?
-Not yet. I think every job is my favorite. I have a lot of desire to do other work, so after doing one job I quickly switch to the soon to start the next one. I don't get hung up on one thing, I switch easily.
-How about idols? Any of the famous masters that you look up to or take their example?
-Yes, of course! My only idol, maybe them and it is impossible to create for itself, but it nevertheless is - is the Ukrainian artist, tattooist, musician Dmitry Samokhin. This is probably the ideal of what I would like to achieve.
- Have you ever refused to work because of a bad mood??
-There have been instances where I have refused to work because, the client was inadequate. He demanded all sorts of things that were completely beyond the sober imagination, and the man didn't understand whether he needed it or not. It's only been a couple of times, and my mood doesn't affect my work.
- Have you ever had work that really sparked your genuine interest? The kind that would go, "Oh yes! I really want to work on that"?
-There have been some, yes. Throughout my creative journey, there are pieces like this, clients like this that I find incredible and interesting and exciting. In just a few years, that kind of work will seem pretty ordinary to me. The more experienced we become, the higher and farther our horizons are.
- And finally. What would you like to wish to young artists who are just starting their creative journey?
- I advise to work a lot, work hard, never "catch a star" and be adequate simple people, and those who want to score - I advise to choose a master carefully, look at his work and only after that go to him to score!
