The photo posted by user uhmodijia on social network Reddit says it is the hand of a "friend of a friend" who just received a minor burn that only damaged the top layer of his skin, exposing the dermis. A while ago, a blue rose had been tattooed on her skin, and like all tattoos, it had begun to fade. However, a section of burned skin that had peeled off due to the burn showed a much brighter copy of the same tattoo. Apparently, tattoos penetrate deep into the skin, and although they begin to fade in the first skin layer only a few months after application, they remain bright under the protective skin layer.

However, not everyone has bought into this theory. Many Reddit users argue that this photo is just photoshopped, noting that the burn itself looks unnatural and that the white tattoo pigment usually disappears first and doesn't go as deep into the skin. Frankly, this tattoo looks suspiciously bright, but that doesn't mean it's fake. In fact, there is scientific evidence that tattoos on the dermis are much brighter than those we see on the top layer of skin.

The same Reddit user also links to an Instagram post by pathologist Nicole Angemi, who two years ago posted a photo of her husband's tattooed arm showing the same striking tattoo on his dermis. He, too, suffered a burn, revealing a vivid image on a deeper layer of skin.
