7 things Sylvester Stallone can teach you

Michael Sylvester Stallone became the third actor in history to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Screenplay and Best Actor at the same time. Before him, only Charlie Chaplin and Orson Welles had achieved this. As a young man he made porno movies, for which he earned the nickname "The Italian Stallion," and his first "real movie" was a countercultural LSD movie. In search of himself, he cleaned lion cages at the zoo, danced naked on Broadway and even considered a career as a burglar. A great man, able to work even with broken ribs, and a hell of a contradiction!

Today he turned 75 years old.

An exuberant father and mother astrologer is no reason to get discouraged

Sylvester Stallone's father Frank Stallone Sr. was from Sicily. He came to the United States to realize the American dream and become a hairdresser and stylist. Admittedly, he didn't have a very refined personality for a refined craft. Frank was rowdy, liked to drink and changed mistresses endlessly. Sylvester, in a sense, inherited his traits. In his youth, he was uncontrollable, often arranged fights, and in old age he was in several sex scandals: in 2001, 2021 and 2021, three women accused him of sexual abuse. However, the prosecutor's office then refused to initiate criminal proceedings.

Stallone's mother, Jacqueline Leibofish, was even more extraordinary person. She was an astrologer, a dancer and a promoter of women's bodybuilding. Also, her ancestors were from Odessa, and in the 1980s she saw Mikhail Gorbachev. If not for his mother and her desperate attempts to instill in Sylvester a love of art, he probably would have ended his days in the electric chair, as his teachers at school prophesied.

The image on Derek's body with clear solid lines can be interpreted as reincarnation .

...As well as innate "ugliness" and exclusion from the 14 schools.

Known fact: Stallone's facial expression is the result of a facial nerve injury. True, it is less well known that he got it while giving birth: his parents were going through lousy times at the time, and Jacqueline was giving birth in a cheap hospital in Hell's Kitchen, a New York neighborhood known for gangster movies. The midwife reached for Sylvester with forceps and damaged his face. His lip, jaw and tongue were partially paralyzed.

All his childhood and adolescence had Stallone hard: peers bullied him because of the strange voice and facial expression. He himself answered them aggressively: constantly fighting and violent hooliganism. He threw arrows out of class windows, set fires, and even stole crosses from the nuns at the Catholic schools where he was sent. In all, Sylvester changed about 14 schools, until his mother, on the sly side, put him in a school in Switzerland.

You can be a model of masculinity and still be a sophisticated man

In the Swiss school Stallone found himself on the stage - he began to play in amateur productions, and after returning to the States, he enrolled at the University of Miami, where he studied dramatic art. He continued to perform on stage and afterwards - until he became a superstar, soaring to the top thanks to "Rocky."

Stallone is a fan of Edgar Allan Poe, whom he has dreamed of making a movie about for decades. It was Poe who inspired him to start writing the script for "Rocky" - Sylvester did it in a dark and sublime mood. As he worked, he asked himself: "What would Edgar Allan do if he were me?" "Rocky" is certainly a strong work, but not sure something like this could have come out of Poe's pen. Stallone's other hero is Leonardo da Vinci. From him he took the image of a versatile "Renaissance man" and his love of painting. Surprisingly, Sylvester is also an artist. At least once he sold his own painting for $90,000.

Sylvester began his first workout at the city dump, where he pulled everything he could find: brake drums, bumpers, car steering column, cinder blocks, and things like that.

Over time, both exercise and stage appearances began to pay off. Even shooting porn went to good use: Stallone was noticed and taken for one of the roles in the erotic Broadway production Score, in which he played 23 performances at the Theater Martinique. And then began and the first shooting in real movies.

In the latter, Sylvester played an evil dumb goon, who harasses the main character in the subway. Woody Allen found him suitable because of his strange facial expression and muscularity. It turns out that it was the midwife's mistake, insane stubbornness and training at the junkyard that led him to the movies.

Broken ribs are no reason not to work!

After the resounding success of "Rocky," Stallone's career took a downturn: new films were passé, prospects floated away. So when he got the lead role in "Rambo", he clung to it with the desperation of a barbarian.

In one scene Stallone broke a few ribs, but continued shooting. So in some scenes he is not acting, but actually suffering from terrible pain. Other actors also suffered: for example, during the scene of the prison break Stallone accidentally broke the nose of the actor Alf Humphries, hitting him in the face with his elbow. Coincidentally, the same thing is done by Rambo in David Morrell's original book, although Stallone probably didn't know that. Humphries wasn't happy, but giving in to the general mood, he didn't whine either and endured out of his last strength.

Stabbing ice meat and running dozens of miles: the birth of Rocky

Seeing that directors did not offer him decent scripts, Stallone decided to write his own. The inspiration for him was boxing. Even being in the creative search and torn between work and filming, he never gave up and continued to train regularly.

March 24, 1975 Stallone, like many boxing fans, went to the fight between the legendary Muhammad Ali and little-known boxer Chuck Wepnerom. Ali was the clear favorite, but, contrary to expectations, Wepner managed to send the champion to a knockdown. And even though he lost in the 15th round, that fight was one of the decisive ones for his career. And also for Stallone's career as a screenwriter. When Sly returned home that night, he locked himself in his room and wouldn't let anyone in. And four days later on his desk was already lying ready-made "Rocky" script.

The story of an unknown boxer from the slums, which fate gives a unique chance to become world champion, Stallone made a true idol, especially in the eyes of millions of teenagers. But for the opportunity to play this role himself, he had to fight. Stallone offered his script to Chartoff-Winkler Productions. The story of Rocky Balboa is so impressed with filmmakers that the author was dishonored for his 350 thousand dollars - a fabulous amount at the time. But the studio has set a condition: the main role must play another actor. Stallone was not satisfied with this arrangement. He said he would accept a fee of 20 thousand, but only if he was given to play Rocky himself. In the end the parties came to an agreement - although the budget of the film was severely cut.

Photo: TASS

But the success of the picture surpassed all expectations. "Rocky" earned at the box office $225 million, received three Oscars ("Best Picture," "Best Director" and "Best Editing"), as well as the Golden Globe (nomination "Best Drama") and many other film awards. Inspired by this success, Stallone took on a sequel to the story of Rocky Balboa. Subsequently, viewers saw four parts of "Rocky" - in 1979, 1982, 1985 and 1990. It should be said that all pictures have a similar structure, and therefore their stories are fairly predictable, and yet each new part of the audience watched with bated breath, sometimes cheering for the main character in times stronger than the real boxers in the ring.

Here it is worth paying tribute to Stallone: he did everything he could to make each film truly thrilling and astonishing. Shooting process was for him a real test: every day the actor ran dozens of miles, hammers on the frozen carcasses, wiping the blood on his knuckles, learning to keep the blow, and endlessly getting in the face. On smoking had to forget forever - at the beginning of filming because of shortness of breath Sly could not last in the ring and five minutes. But in any scene he did not use an understudy, did everything himself.

It would seem that with the release of the final part of the "Rocky" in 1990, the iconic character of Stallone retired. But, as is often the case with successful franchises, he returned again after a while. In 2006, the sixth installment was released, in which the 44-year-old Stallone played an aging, retired boxer who has to step back into the ring. And nine years later, in 2015, the creators of "Rocky" released several more films in which the main character was the son of Balboa's former opponent and mentor, "Creed" and "Creed 2."
